Mark Twain unravels the plight of human being who is selfish by nature in choosing things for himself which are purely transitory. The fairy tried to test the youth by offering him five boons-Fame, Love, Riches, Pleasure and death and kept insisting to scrupulously select just one. However, the youth went for those boons that spelt disappointment, disgust, hatred and insolvency. Finally he was fed up with the wretched life he was living. He begged the fairy to grant him death as a boon. But even death eluded him since it was already bestowed upon a child. His experience was like every human being’s, based on futile attempts that never get them anywhere and so was the case with him. He requested for boons, when analyzed their opposites are Shame, poverty, pain and grief. The only positive boon was death the antonym of which is eternal life which the man failed to choose in the first place.
